What is polished concrete?

It is a result of a process of step-by-step grinding and polishing of bonded abrasives in order to achieve a certain level of gloss on the surface. This includes the process of using chemical densifiers to fill in any gaps in your floor and integrating varieties of colour and patterns to fit any desired outcome for your polished flooring.

How do I choose the right type?

Here are a few things you need to consider:

#1. Hire licensed and professional experts

#2. Know the amount of experience of the company that you hired

#3. Get to know the quality of the products

#4. Assess the structure and technical description of your property

#5. Ask for expert advice on all types of facilities.

How much does concrete polishing cost in Melbourne?

The cost ranges from $50 to $100 per square metre. The price depends on the method used. The grind and seal method starts at $50 per square metre, while the honed polishing method starts at $75 per square metre. Opting for the mechanical approach would involve precision and heavy equipment and cost around $100 per square metre.

What are the factors that affect the cost?

#1. Colour

The polishing costs less if only a single colour will be used and will increase the cost if multiple colours are added.

#2. Gloss or shine level

The glossier the finish, the more steps will be needed to perform polishing, which will incur additional costs.

#3. Size of the property.

The total area influences the entire overall cost. However, larger spaces can decrease the price per square metre.

#4. Existing floor.

Additional fees will be incurred if the current flooring needs to be removed. If the floor is covered with linoleum or is currently carpeted, there is a need to remove the glue. This will add costs to the surface preparation.

#5. Condition of the existing floor.

There is a need to repair holes, cracks, and gouges in the existing surface before the start of the polishing process.

How long does the polishing take in Melbourne?

It depends. If you have a more complicated or larger area, the polishing process can take up to 2-3 days. However, you can use the polished concrete surface immediately once the polishing process is done. For other instances, the level of polishing and the amount of preparation done to your floor may affect the duration of finishing the process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CONCRETE POLISHING IN MELBOURNE

Can Any Flooring Be Polished?

Yes. This means whether you have an old floor or a new one, it can be subject to polishing. However, it is worth noting that certain factors may vary if you want to polish a new or an existing one. Polishing new floor usually is not confronted with suitability issues. With an existing one, preparatory work may be needed such as removing old coatings or apparent dirt.

What is the best method for polishing?

#1. Remove existing coatings. This part requires a 16-grit diamond, 20-grit diamond, or other specialised tools for this part.

#2. Seal joints. Use epoxy or a semi-rigid filler to seal all cracks and joints.

#3. Start grinding. Use a metal-bonded 30 or 40-grit diamond. Continue doing this using an 80-grit metal-bonded diamond.

#4. Continue grinding. Shift to a 150-grit metal-bonded diamond.

#5. Densify. Use a chemical hardener to the flooring to densify it.

#6. Polish. Use a 100 or 200-grit diamond to polish. Continue by using a 400-grit resin-bond diamond. Move further with an 800-grit diamond. Final polishing should use a 1500 or 3000-grit resin-bond diamond.

How long does polished flooring last?

If you have your floor polished through professional help, and you are equipped with an effective maintenance plan, plus occasional cleaning, the floor can last up to 20 years or more.

What is the difference between concrete polishing and epoxy?

Here are a few key differences:

#1. As to appearance, polished concrete gives you a smooth look achieved by the grinding of the surface and polishing the same according to the desired finish. An epoxy flooring has a more glossy look due to a resin finish.

#2. As for durability, this material does not easily scratch as compared to epoxy flooring due to the former’s more intricate installation process that requires a polishing machine.
